From the Feedback Files: Cancelled flights due to aircraft inspections

With the recent news of American Airlines canceling over half of its flight schedule, we’ve received questions about travelers’ alternatives and American’s obligations. To help level the playing field, we’ve done a little research.

What has created this sudden increase in delays and inspections?

After 9-11, congress eased up on the airlines given the financial impact from the reduction in travel, but their leniency has run out. Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, James Oberser, is demanding airlines upkeep and maintain their aircraft, and the FAA is taking note. Delta, Alaska, Southwest, and American Airlines all have been affected by the recent investigation in aircraft maintenance. A spokesperson for the FAA said that the audits will continue through the end of June. When asked if there will be more groundings, she responded “We don’t know, we find what we find.” Are the thousands of cancellations and delays worth the headaches and ruined vacations? You have to wonder where the FAA’s been the past couple years and what, if any, is the real reason Mr. Oberser’s is coming down so hard on the FAA and the airlines.

What do I do if my flight was grounded?

If you’re flight has been grounded due to the unexpected Aircraft Inspections of American Airlines, you’re in luck (well, kinda)! Because the cancellation was NOT because of weather and completely out of your control, you are allowed to rebook your reservation with no fee or request a full refund (see the next question for more details). If you were stuck overnight, write to the American Airlines Customer Relations to inquire about compensation for your inconvenience. Airlines often provide passengers meal vouchers when delayed at the airport – if they don’t offer it, be sure to let them know a meal voucher will make your inconvenience a bit easier. If you’d rather speak with a representative, call 800-433-7300. For AAdvantage reservations call 800-882-8880.

Wondering if you can get a refund for your canceled flight?

American Airlines suggests requesting a refund online. Just enter your ticket number and the last name of the traveler, and AA will determine the eligibility and options for your reservation. American Airlines apologizes for this disruption and has promised to accommodate travelers’ needs with full refunds or by allowing them to re-book. Unfortunately they’re not offering any discounts of future flights, but just making good on your current plans. Request a refund now

What about the Airline Passenger’s Bill of Rights?

Kaye Hanni, founder of the Coalition for Airline Passenger’s Bill of Rights, is still fighting for her law to be passed. Just two weeks ago, a US appeals court threw out New York’s “Passenger Bill of Rights.” The ATA supported the court’s decision stating, “A patchwork of laws by states and localities would be impractical and harmful to the consumer interests.” A passenger currently has no rights beyond their contract (ticket) and general government regulations. This Bill proposes a set of rights that all U.S. air carriers should follow, with rights ranging from airlines providing passengers with fresh air and water during delays over three hours, to providing “bumped” passengers or a passenger inconvenienced due to flight cancelations or delays a refund of 150% of the original ticket price. If you think this is something worth fighting for, I urge you to check out the official site and show your support by signing their petition. If not, leave a comment and let us know how you feel too.
